Yes, you can send text messages from VoIP phone numbers. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) allows service providers to connect their service to cellular networks. However, this capability must be activated before VoIP texting can be used.

With a small business phone system like Nextiva, you can send text messages directly from your VoIP number to mobile phones. It's the easiest way to communicate with customers without a third-party SMS provider.

VoIP texting works by sending text messages to a trusted phone carrier through the internet. The VoIP phone provider manages this handoff between the internet and the cell phone carrier.

The message is then sent as a standard text message to the recipient's mobile device via the cellular network. It looks and functions just like a regular text message.

When using VoIP with SMS, there are a few limitations to consider:

  • Large file sizes: Additionally, very large images or videos larger than 1 MB are not supported.
  • SMS shortcodes: At this time, Nextiva does not support SMS shortcodes.
  • Recipient consent: Businesses must maintain records of consent for sending text messages for commercial purposes, such as marketing campaigns.
