What is a Default Gateway?

The default gateway is an IP address. A device on a network sends data it intends to exit its network to this address when it does not have a specific route.

When reviewing IP configuration information in the Command Prompt, the default gateway is the IP address of the router. If a device isn't sure, it sends data to the router.

This is important if a device requires a static IP address.
