What is a Local Call?

A local call is a call made while accessing a single switching center. It usually represents calls made within one area code or municipality.

Local calls were necessary to facilitate 7-digit dialing. In both mobile calling and VoIP calling, the idea of “local” calls being the only free calls is gone.
