What is a Network Interface Device (NID)?

NID or Network Interface Device is the separation between a carrier’s local cabling and a customer’s on-premise wiring. Phone companies maintain wiring until the NID after which customers are responsible for the wiring.

They essentially provide a connection to a PSTN and are also known as a Network Interface Unit.
