A key system is reminiscent of landline phone structures. All phones share the same lines, so a call on line 1 was a call on everyone’s line 1. This enables calls to be held at one location and picked up at another location.
Key systems limit the number of calls that can be held by all phones that participate in the system.
They inherited a lot of modern PBX features over time and might be seen as the more economical choice between the two.
