A ringback is an audio file that plays in place of ringing. It only persists while the phone is ringing but remains unanswered. Ringback tones of popular songs were common in the early 2000s with the rise of cell phones.
Because any audio file played in place of ringing will be interrupted when the phone is answered, it’s not a good location for ads or targeted messaging.
