What is a Gateway?

A gateway is a device that contains the functions of a modem and a router. Networks often lease these devices from their ISP at an additional charge.

They are often limited in their settings to reduce strain on the ISP resources. Some services require a gateway. This can cause network issues if used with another router, such as a Double NAT.
