What is a Softphone?

Softphone is a portmanteau of “Software phone”. A softphone is an application that can establish a connection to a service provider. This allows it to make and receive calls.

Softphones are available as desktop or mobile applications.

A softphone has a dial pad to be able to call any phone number. It also utilizes a computer’s audio input and output to make the call. Because of the nature of audio communication a headset is recommended.
