NAT stands for Network Address Translation. NAT translates data coming from inside a network, into a form that can be understood by the internet.
This process allows the information to go out over the internet. The same process allows it to return to the issuing private address on its network.
It makes sure that your computer gets back the information requested from the internet, not someone else’s computer.
